    Hi, what’s the size of the spinnaker and the bow sprit pole length? Any help would be appreciated

    • @JanLeoKaak
      @JanLeoKaak 15 днів тому

      Honestly I don't remember. I believe it was the same size as a Hobie 16 Spinnaker. Probably somewhere between 16-20 sqm. Pole length no idea. It was split as well for easier shipping and then connected in the center.

    merk je solo met de gennaker veel verschil in snelheid geeft ten opzichte van een fok solo varend? En het lijkt of je solo met de gennaker af en toe van je koers af wordt geduwd als hij goed de wind pakt? Zie ik dat goed of ben jij aan het sturen om te zoeken om de wind optimaal in de zeilen te hebben (ik ben een complete beginner met de dart 18)?

    • @JanLeoKaak
      @JanLeoKaak 9 місяців тому

      I'd say you're quite a bit faster on the downwind mostly because you can sail a deeper angle with more speed. The following applies to catamarans with asymmetric spinnakers (and in broader terms to many other boats with the same type of sail): With most boats you have the most power on a beam reach, when the boat is sailing perpendicular to the true wind angle. When hoisting the spinnaker or after a jibe you point the boat more to windward (from almost straight downwind). You will feel more power as you move closer to a beam reach. As the hull starts to lift you can hold your course. If a gust hits, you bear away to decrease the power and to not capsize. You trim the sail accordingly so that the luff of the spinnaker is almost collapsing but not quite. This results in mostly course changes to adapt to the gusts, lulls and shifts in the wind. I hope this helps. Downwind with the spinnaker is more about course changes than sail trim (though important as well). The main sail stays locked in tight to support the mast.

    Are these boats sailed with a single trapeze in races or double?im confused

    • @JanLeoKaak
      @JanLeoKaak 4 роки тому

      From what I've seen only one trapeze is race legal. However since I'm not racing and don't plan on racing national or above races with strict regulations I'm running twin trapeze wires. I've been double trapezing my Dart before. Mind you that when reaching you really need to shift your weight towards the back to keep the bow from dipping in too deep. I guess this is easier with the helm not trapezing and the crew right behind him. I'm not running a class legal rig anyway. It's a Forward Sailing rig with square top main.

    loved this. would you recommend this camera to a young videographer thats looking to get a little more serious?

    • @JanLeoKaak
      @JanLeoKaak 8 років тому

      It's definitely a solid camera. The mark II has a couple useful features on top of that. Make sure to grab some decent ND filters and get some grading experience and LUTs. Also lots of batteries or external power.

    • @Veehlo
      @Veehlo 8 років тому

      so would you take this over the mark ii?

    • @JanLeoKaak
      @JanLeoKaak 8 років тому

      +John Landry The mark II has more features. The big argument for the original is price. Consider whether you need 4k. With the cash saved you could get filters/lenses

    • @Veehlo
      @Veehlo 8 років тому

      +Jan-Leo Kaak how does the slow motion and low light on the a7s compare to the mark ii. lighting situations for me are going to be a problem so thats why i was looking into the a7s

    • @JanLeoKaak
      @JanLeoKaak 8 років тому

      +John Landry There's plenty of info on either model on the internet. As far as I read the mark II improved upon both. Consider getting the mark one and some lights. You'll be a lot more flexible. Also lighting is more important than the camera you use.

    Excellent! I'm considering purchasing Impulz LUTS. What was your process / which LUT did you choose?

    • @JanLeoKaak
      @JanLeoKaak 9 років тому

      +Jeff Moltenberry Well, my process was pretty much just grading everything in Speedgrade. I applied a LUT from either Osiris or Impulz and tweaked the clips to my liking. I ended up using multiple LUTs, I can't recall wich ones exactly

    Nice! 120fps? does images get soft when filming at aps-c mode?

    • @JanLeoKaak
      @JanLeoKaak 10 років тому

      Only the two firework shots are 120fps. The rest should be 60fps (40% on a 24fps timeline). I didn't notice a difference between FF and APS-C mode. Switched during the video a couple times I think. The video quality before UA-cam is a lot better of course.
